  • St Benet’s Abbey Celebrations

    Anyone with a keen interest in local history will be interested to learn that The Friends of St Benet’s Abbey and Parrabbola are currently busy creating a performance to mark 1000 years since King Canute granted land and property to establish St Benet’s Abbey. This will be a community play (theatre made of the people, by the people, for the people) and it will take place in the summer of 2019 at the site of the St Benet’s Abbey ruins.

    Brian Abbott is researching and writing the play for Parrabbola and he’d like to hear local stories about St Benet’s Abbey, as well as personal memories or thoughts about the site. Questionnaires have been made available to more than 2000 local residents, asking for stories and offering the chance to be involved in the play.   • Welcome Cllr Alan Scott

    Hoveton Parish Council is pleased to announce the co-option of a new parish councillor, Mr Alan Scott, who joined the Council at our December meeting. Cllr Scott lives on Brook Park and is already proving a very valuable addition to the Parish Council team. Hoveton Parish Council would like to extend a warm welcome to Cllr Scott and to wish him well in his new role as a parish councillor.

    Following Cllr Scott’s co-option, there are still four vacant seats around Hoveton Parish Council’s table. Perhaps you’d like to join us too? The role of a parish councillor is truly rewarding and fulfilling. It gives you the opportunity to play a key role in the decisions that affect life in our village and to make a positive contribution to the many areas of work the Parish Council is involved in.   • NCC Budget Consultation

    Norfolk County Council’s 2019/20 budget consultation is currently inviting members of the public to have their say on some of the latest budget and council tax proposals made by Norfolk County Council (NCC). With the amount of money NCC receives from central government rapidly declining, these proposals include a plan to save £79 million over the next three years, while NCC is also identifying ways of bridging a remaining funding gap of £45.98 million.

    Though a council tax increase has been proposed, Hoveton Parish Council has been advised that this won’t be enough to balance NCC’s budget, meaning NCC must continue to make difficult decisions over how funds are spent. The consultation closes on 23rd December 2018 and local residents can have their say at www.norfolk.gov.uk/budget.   • Hoveton Police Update

    Local residents will be pleased to hear that speeding on Stalham Road has been identified as a new SNAP (Safer Neighbourhood Action Panel) priority. This means that enforcement action will likely take place on Stalham Road over the next six weeks. Residents will also be pleased to hear that data gathered by Hoveton’s SAM2 is to be used in the prosecution of a speeding motorist.

    Thankfully, Hoveton remains ‘burglary free’ at the moment, though historically in the run-up to Christmas there is a rise in dwelling burglary offences. With this in mind, residents are advised to report anything suspicious to Norfolk Police and to think about prevention (leaving lights on, leaving a car on the drive when out if possible, making sure doors and windows are locked). If you’re going away for Christmas, tell a neighbour and ask them to put a car on your driveway if they can.

    Unfortunately, however, fly-tipping appears to be on the up. If you see fly-tipping taking place, this may be reported to Norfolk Police or to North Norfolk District Council. Fraud offences are also sadly becoming more frequent. Please contact Norfolk Constabulary on the non-emergency number 101 (or 999 if a crime is in progress) if you are concerned you may have been targeted in a fraud offence, or call Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.

    Finally, a date for your diaries. Hoveton’s Beat Manager, PC Tom Gibbs, will be opening Hoveton Police Station to the public on Friday 18th January 2019 between 3pm and 4pm for a community engagement surgery. This is a wonderful opportunity for local residents to speak to PC Gibbs directly about any local issues or concerns they might have. He will have the kettle on!
