• Flowerbed Vandalism

As you may be aware, Hoveton Parish Council has recently taken over responsibility for arranging the planting and maintenance of our village’s public flowerbeds. We hope you’ll be pleased with the results now that most of the initial planting has been completed, and the Council is immensely grateful to our tireless lead volunteer horticulturalist and her small group of helpers for the hours they’ve already spent digging, prepping, planting and watering the flowerbeds. We’re sure you’ll agree their hard work is much appreciated and that the village is looking brighter as a result.

It is disappointing to report, therefore, that just a few weeks after the flowerbeds by the village sign were planted with an array of beautiful marigolds, the beds were vandalised, with flowers being trampled on, broken, or ripped out of the ground and scattered on the grass. This mindless act of vandalism will not only have a financial impact, in that your Parish Council has to replace the damaged plants, but it also shows a blatant disregard for the efforts of our community volunteers, who have worked so hard to make Hoveton look nice.

We hope local residents will help us to look after these floral displays, which make such a difference to the look of our village. Please take care around the flowerbeds and if you see anyone interfering with them, please let the police or the Parish Council know.

  • Brook Park Update

Hoveton Parish Council and District Councillor Nigel Dixon held an on-site meeting with the developer Persimmon on Friday, to discuss outstanding matters relating to the Brook Park development and to emphasise the disappointment of the Council and of residents of this development concerning the lack of progress made. The meeting addressed a long list of varied issues and the Parish Council made clear the need to have these issues addressed quickly and completely by Persimmon.

Hoveton Parish Council has been informed that the children’s play area at Brook Park is expected to be open for the school summer holidays. It will initially be fenced off via the repositioning of the temporary Heras fencing, with an access gate. Permanent fencing and an access gate is expected to be installed after the holidays. The fencing around the rest of the public open space will be removed shortly to open this space for public use. We hope to be able to publish a full list of Persimmon’s agreed actions shortly, and the Parish Council will meet with Persimmon again in early September to discuss progress made.

  • Clerk’s Annual Leave

Hoveton’s Parish Clerk will now be on annual leave until Monday 24th June. If you need the Council’s assistance while the Clerk is away, please contact a parish councillor.

  • New Village Signage

Following a successful bid to the Parish Partnership Scheme, Hoveton Parish Council has arranged the installation of a new fingerpost sign in our village centre, to direct visitors to the village to amenities such as the tourist information centre, public toilets, village hall, and railway station.

The new sign is now in place near the junction of Station Road and the A1151 and Hoveton Parish Council would like to thank Norfolk County Council for its support of this project, and the Bure Valley Railway for its generous donation of £200 toward the cost of the sign.

  • New Play Equipment For Hoveton

We’re pleased to report that, following completion of essential repairs and maintenance, the children’s playground area at Hoveton Village Hall is once again open for little ones to enjoy. Thank you to all those who donated funds to assist with the cost of the initial repairs to the playground equipment, and an extra special thank you to Collins & Co Painting and Decorating, who kindly volunteered their time over the May bank holiday weekend to give the playground equipment a much-needed repaint (and also to Crown Decorating Centre in Norwich, who donated all of the materials needed for this job). A wonderful example of community spirit at its best!

Meanwhile, hot on the heels of the refurbished play area, Hoveton Village Hall’s playing field now offers brand new equipment for local youngsters to enjoy, following the recent installation of a zip wire and a new large swing set!

These improvements wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work and dedication of the Hoveton Village Hall Management Committee, in particular Cllr Jilly Gourlay and Cllr Ann Rogers, who have worked tirelessly over the past few years to improve facilities at the Village Hall for local residents. However, the Management Committee consists of only four local volunteers at present (including Cllr Gourlay and Cllr Rogers) so more help is needed if the Village Hall is to survive and thrive.

Why not get involved and give something back to your local community? After all, nobody cares more about your Village Hall than you! For more information or to chat about what’s involved, please contact Cllr Jilly Gourlay (07818 214277 or twinklingjilly@gmail.com). In the meantime, please follow Hoveton Village Hall’s Facebook page for regular updates!
